Edinburgh Moment: How to Strip the Willow – Orcadian style

Dancing Forth – The Scottish Show bring some Scottish traditions to the festival the show is a celebration of Schottish music, dance and song. Here’s a few dancing tips by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

Firstly, you must know your left hand from your right. Secondly, make sure you’ve fully rehearsed the all important elbow grip and lastly, take a deep breath and plough straight in until you’ve spun your way to the bottom of the room. Then clap frantically as you slowly move towards the top, pausing only to turn a random arm that seems to have been flung in your direction. Once you’ve reached the top, the whole process starts again until the music stops or the dancers tire out, whichever is sooner!

However, if two hours of dizziness and a headache in the morning doesn’t take your fancy, why not head down to Dancing Forth – the Scottish Show during the Fringeat the Edinburgh Academy. One of the few truly Scottish shows left in the Fringe, the award winning dancers, musicians, singers and speakers will show the very best of Scottish tradition, culture and heritage. There’s even a Ceilidh on the Friday (12th) night so you can demonstrate your newly acquired Strip the Willow technique.

Dancing Forth – The Scottish Show runs from 9-13 August at the Edinburgh Academy at 19.30.
