Brief Encounter With … The Hamwehads’s Kat’s Whiskers

Bringing back their show The Hamwehads to the Fringe, Kat’s Whiskers use puppetry, poetry, music and storytelling to take their audiences to magical lands. Kat Georghiou and Katie Thompson talk about their upcoming show.

Who are Kat’s Whiskers?

Kat’s Whiskers are Kat Georghiou and Katie Thompson. Two old pals from drama school who share the same passion for entertaining children and general silliness.

How are things going, you all ready for the Fringe?

Things are going great. We’ve got a new actor playing Asa this year and he’s given the show more of an edgy urban slant. We’ve also added a few bits to make it even bigger and better then last year, and we can’t wait for people to see it. But are we ready? We think so. By the time Edinburgh comes round we’ll have performed the show twice at Latitude, twice and Camp Bestival and once at our preview, so we’ll be raring to go.

Tell us a bit about your show, what can we expect?

It’s Asa’s birthday and his dog Lola has dragged him into a hole at the bottom of the garden, to a place called ‘Down Below’. On the surface everything appears quite normal. But take a closer look and all is not quite as it seems; mice generate the electricity; the chefs are French rabbits; spiders talk in riddles; moles get eaten for supper; and mysterious creatures called Hamwehads rule. With animated puppets, imaginative storytelling, lyrical poetry, catchy songs and a death defying slapstick battle, your only worry is, will Asa and Lola ever get home?

What does Hamewehad mean?

It doesn’t mean anything. One day Kat was talking about the “ham we had in the fridge”, naturally she thought that was an amazing word and should be added to the English language. And so the word Hamwehad was born.

Best five words that describe your show?

Energetic, slapstick, adventure, comedy, entertainment

What’s Kat’s Whiskers biggest claim to fame?

We performed with Justin Fletcher aka Mr Tumble for the launch of his CBBC magazine Something
Special
. He is as lovely in real life as he is on the telly and we are now his number 1 fans!

What’s next for Kat’s Whiskers?

We have big plans for Kat’s Whiskers. As well as continuing with our fortnightly radio show on
www.reelrebelsradio.com, we’ll be performing The Hamwehads where ever we can, writing a brand
new show, entertaining children at birthday parties plus a couple more tricks up our sleeves… So watch this space!

Kat’s Whiskers and their show The Hamwehads are to be seen at the Laughing Horse at The Counting House from 4 – 18 August (excl 15) at 12.00.
