Brief Encounter With … Naked in a Fishbowl‘s Katherine Heller
Naked in a Fishbowl is an improvised sitcom that chronicles the lives of six New York City friends. The episode are filmed and can then also be watched online. Actress Katherine Heller talks about to Greg Weisbert about the show.
Greg: I’ve seen your show live and online, and it is both touching and hilarious. I have to know – how much of your real life do you bring into the show?
Katharine: Great question. All of it. (laughs) Actually, it varies with each actress. Personally, I like making my character very close to who I am, because I have some really crazy, true stories that I love sharing with strangers. So long as the names are changed, I can always say I made it up.
Greg: The show is an hour-long improvised sitcom, and each show pretty much picks up where the storylines left off at the last show. Do you have a script so you know where your character is going?
Katharine: We have backstory, but that’s it. The only thing we know when we start each show is what is happening in the lives of our characters and our starting location.
Greg: What’s the most exciting thing about going to Edinburgh?
Katharine: Seeing all the amazing shows in the festival. Oh, and the scotch.
Naked in a Fishbowl premiered in the NY International Fringe Festival in 2007 and the cast was presented with the Outstanding Ensemble Award and hailed as the “brightest lights of the festival.” Since re-launching in 2010, this female comedy troupe has created over 30 original episodes in front of a live theatre audience. The resulting web series has garnered over 300,000 hits online and has been viewed in more than 80 countries.
