Assistant Producer Mill Goble Enjoys Being Busy

This year marks my third experience of the Edinburgh Fringe
– three years ago I visited for a week to see where things were and how things
worked, two years ago I brought two shows up (one at the Gilded Balloon and one
on the Laughing Horse Free Fringe), and last year I took a year off to tour a
show in London and the South East instead.

However, this year also marks my first experience of working
with a huge team of people working on a total of twelve shows between us. I’m
amazed at the huge operation that Festival Highlights has produced, and I feel
so privileged to be a part of it. I’m here as part of my second placement on
the Stage One Apprenticeship for New Producers – a fabulous scheme that gives
aspiring theatre producers the opportunity to spend two six-month placements in
West End producers’ offices, gaining practical experience of producing
commercial theatre, as well as a wealth of industry knowledge and an incredible
network of contacts along the way.

It’s been a busy three months since I started working with
James Seabright and his team, not only working on getting these shows up to
Edinburgh, but also touring several shows to regional venues over the last
months, and preparations for performances in the Autumn as well. The work here
really never stops – perhaps why I’m preparing this blog after midnight after
swapping scheduled blog dates with a colleague who is currently at a late night
technical rehearsal.

I’ve been given responsibility for line managing two of our
shows – The Fitzrovia Radio Hour and Cabaret
Whore: More More More!
Oddly enough, the
show I worked on two years ago returned last year and shared a venue with
Sarah-Louise Young from
Cabaret Whore so we’ve all had a bit of a reunion this year! I feel really lucky to
be working on both of these shows with such talented and lovely teams, it
doesn’t really feel like work at all – but I suppose that’s why any of us
pursue a career in the arts; it’s all about living to work rather than working
to live, and I certainly intend to continue on this path for years to come.
