When their Mother sends Hansel and Gretel out of the house to look for food, the children quickly find themselves lost in the depths of a dark forest. Finally, almost starving, they find a house made of bread, cakes and sweets. No one's about; in their relief they begin to eat. However, the house is inhabited by a Witch, who hunts children to turn into gingerbread. She captures Hansel and Gretel, and begins to fatten them up, ready for the oven...
Puccini's most enduring opera. The story of the love of the poor poet Rodolfo for the consumptive seamstress Mimi. Set in the Latin Quarter of Paris the course of their love is constantly threatened by Rodolfo's jealousy and Mimi's illness. The painter Marcello and the provocative Musetta are the other main characters. This is where 'your tiny hand is frozen' comes from and the last few bars, as Rodolfo realises Mimi is dead, are some of opera's most moving moments.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Count Almaviva lusts after the delicious Susanna, Figaro's bride to be. The neglected Countess pines for her husband's attentions and, as she tries to make him jealous, love and suspicion abound. The libretto by Jacopo Ferretti is based on a play by an unknown author, but ultimately derives from an episode of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Unusually for its time, the plot centres on a male victim of spousal infidelity. After his wife Eleonora is unfaithful, Cardenio flees for an island in the West Indies, where he loses his senses and his mind. The Wild Man of the West Indies features a love story of huge psychological depth, and a host of beautiful bel canto arias
New production. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
