Sherman 5: How do you solve a problem like inclusion?
Travelling around the UK for our Regional Theatre Focus series this year, we've spoken to many people about the efforts their theatres go to in the name of inclusion and engagement. From West Yorkshire Playhouse's pioneering work with dementia sufferers, to Liverpool Everyman's far-reaching community outreach programme. One of the most successful schemes we've heard about is Sherman 5.
Supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Sherman Theatre's community outreach programme is aimed at people from across Cardiff and the surrounding areas who have never attended a performance at the Sherman Theatre due to various barriers and/or disadvantages.
The scheme offers members a free ticket to their first show at the theatre, reduced tickets for subsequent visits and free coach transport to the venue, as well as discounts in the theatre's cafe, and other free events and activities. In return its members act as ambassadors for the venue, promoting its activities to the local community.
We spoke with the programme's coordinator Guy O'Donnell and member Tasmin Hunt to find out more.
