Future plans for the Tobacco Factory Theatres in Bristol have been announced today with a proposed project to relocate its second theatre space within the main Tobacco Factory building.

By transforming the existing dance studio, a new 86-seat theatre space including dressing rooms and advanced technical facilities can be created. The new theatre would provide an additional space to the existing Factory Theatre after the recent closure of the Brewery Theatre.

As well as the front of house area being increased in size, community classes will now be moved to the closed Brewery Studio spaces with the old Brewery Theatre acting as an extra rehearsal space for artists and companies.

Ali Robertson, director of Tobacco Factory Theatres said: "A second, smaller space allows us to present outstanding young talent from emerging artists and companies, as well as cutting edge new writing, wonderfully engaging family shows and less performed work, both from touring companies or as in-house productions…This type of programming has an important impact on inspiring the next generation of theatre makers and audiences.

"It will bring our two spaces together under one roof; making Tobacco Factory Theatres a wonderful place for actors and companies to work alongside one another and for audiences to enjoy the experience of a bustling, welcoming venue which is bursting with creativity and personality."

The new theatre project is subject to funding and further information will be published over the coming months as funding application results are announced.

It was announced in December that the Brewery Theatre would close temporarily from January this year as a performance space, due to changes in insurance and licensing demands.
