Fine Feathers on Sale for Fine Birds in Norwich

We’re all used to pre-Christmas sales, but there’s a pretty unusual one on in Norwich this Friday and Saturday (6 and 7 November). The Theatre Royal has been weeding out its costume store which has become seriously overcrowded. From 10.00am until 4.00pm you can rummage to your heart’s content in the theatre’s Town Close Room and come away with a real bargain.

The theatre’s technical director Will Hill explains that “we were running out of space for costumes so we are putting a selection up for sale at bargain prices. They are all professionally designed and made, ranging from tailored suits and beautiful dresses to Ugly Sister’s robes and a flamboyant Dame’s dress from a previous pantomime.” So – if you fancy yourself in drag, as a courtier or society hostess from some past century or even the monarch who rules over them – this is your opportunity to clothe the part with real style.

At the Theatre Royal’s open day this summer a selection of costumes was sold off with the buyers representing both amateur dramatic groups and die-hard theatre fans. As a theatre spokesman points out “this will be the last opportunity for a while to snap up some of these lovingly-created historic stage garments.” Some lucky people may even find one of the costumes among their gifts this Christmas.
