Cambridge Junction has a new name, director and vision for the future

Another new year.
Another spring season. A new name and a new director. So The
Junction, Cambridge morphs into the Cambridge Junction as Daniel
Brine
takes up the post of director with the intention to meld
different art forms in its various spaces and to break down the barriers between popular
culture, arts programming and creative learning. It all sounds very
comprehensive.

The programme for
February and March has a mixture of music, comedy and theatre, family
and children’s shows and art. Dotted throughout are Sample evenings
where excerpts from various works-in-progress are staged as well as a
full-scale Sampler Night (previously known as Jam), which this season
is on 27 March.

Judging from the
programme at the official launch, compered by Brine and Bryony
Kimmings
, these will present
a foretaste of productions due to do the rounds of this year’s fringe
theatre festivals. They included Hunt and Darton, H2Dance and
Tattenbaum Deluca‘s Tatty-Del Are Making It Work.
The Sampler Festival itself is on 4 and 5 May while summer will see
the annual HotBed new writing festival organised by Menagerie.

Brine’s opening address
emphasised that the various programme strands are to be regarded as
equal, occasions where art meets life. The creative learning section
includes apprenticeships, BTec qualifications and an interesting
association with the University of Cambridge, aptly titled Junction
University. This offers monthly free Saturday sessions across various
art forms. A new seasonal publication adjunct gives
patrons of Cambridge Junction the opportunity to read about all these
initiatives at greater length and depth.
