Grimm Tales (Tour – Dinnington)

When it comes too inventive theatre NTC (Northumberland Theatre Company) are among the best. This tour of Grimm Tales (adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and dramatised by Tim Supple), playing village halls around Northumberland, meets nothing but appreciation from the audience for doing so.

The cast of four (Eleanor Dennison, Louis Roberts, Umar Ahmed, Luke MacGregor) plays many parts as they retell eight lesser know Grimm Tales, each one gripping in its own way. Nicely directed by Gillian Hambleton Act One is far stronger that Act Two, but nevertheless, it is still entertaining.

While this is an ensemble piece, you cannot help but be drawn to Louis Roberts. No matter what character he is playing, his every movement, word, expression and look is something to savour. He immediately connects with the audience and never lets the connection wavier for a second.

With the transit van parked right at the door after the show it was a case of packing up the equipment and setting off for another village hall to do it all again. While the funding cuts towards the group are mentioned, it does not affect the performance. But it is hard to believe that such a worthwhile theatre group could not be around this time next year.
