Roy “Chubby” Brown (Tour – Whitley Bay)

Playhouse, Whitley Bay

For a performer to pack out theatres year after without ever appearing on TV is something so special that we took the opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. But there are enough warnings for the Roy Chubby Brown audiences to be aware that anyone easily offended should stay away. However, that does not stop the venues being packed out with adults of all ages, in fact it may help by making anyone new to the comedian even more curious to see what all the fuss is about.

When the lights dim the atmosphere immediately changes, as the audience start to chant one of Chubby’s catch phrases until the man himself steps on to the stage. Once the initial applause dies down, Brown hits us with a relentless barrage of jokes, all containing the expletives that he is so well known for.

Part of the secret is that even if you take away the swear words, the actual jokes are still very funny so the act has a good solid base to build from. While his comments may be totally non PC, the reaction he receives makes you realise his views, although totally over the top for the stage, are appreciated.

The act is a mixture of stories, jokes and songs, well known to his fans who are always ready to join in given half the chance.

There is no doubting Chubby Brown will be filling venues for a long yet, and his fan base will keep on growing, although do not expect to see him on T.V. anytime soon, this is one act that has to be experienced in a live theatre only.
