Midnight Tango (Tour – Sunderland)

Mention the names Vincent and Flavia and you immediately think of Strictly Come Dancing and tango. But when you realise Arlene Philips is the Producer of their stage show, Midnight Tango, you immediately know it will be a high quality show.

Morgan Large has set the show in a large atmospheric Argentine bar, while Director, Karen Bruce ensures there are nice moments of gentle comedy, especially from the two bar owners played by Teddy Kemper and Tricia Deighton, who become the heroes of the piece.

However, its Vincent and Flavia who the audience have come to see and they do not disappoint. But it does take until the much stronger second half of the show for the couple to come in to their own. There last few tangos were spellbinding, as was Flavia when showing off her skills at playing the violin.

With a running time of under two hours, including an interval, the momentum is kept up throughout, but there is only so much tango you can take. So, I could not help but feel the second half of the show would have been better served by being combined with another dancing style, ideally from another Strictly Come Dancing couple. That being said, this is the show for anyone who loves tango.
