Local Heroes -The Cup Comes Hyem is a one-off exhibition telling the story of the 1910 triumph and homecoming through words, restored images and memorabilia.
A century ago this April, back in 1910, the Black ’n’ Whites lifted their first trophy – and this after five attempts to do so. They had won three league titles but try as they did they could not bring the FA Cup to Tyneside. Until 1910 that is, when United’s Edwardian Masters became a celebrated team and the best side in the country. The team have since played in no fewer than 13 FA Cup finals and lifted the famous trophy on six occasions. Few clubs have a more colourful history in the competition.
Club historian Paul Joannou says: “This is a one-off and it is important to mark the Club’s centenary of our first trophy victory. Back then the FA Cup was the competition to win – now it’s the Premier League and Champions League, but 100 years ago the FA Cup was king.”
Restoration photographer Jan Radwanski notes: “We have enhanced and enlarged some of the historic images of those cup finals and victory procession back on Tyneside; the results are outstanding and never seen before in such detail.”
The Exhibition is being held at the Theatre Royal Newcastle on Grey Street, in the Olivier Suite.
