Hard to Catch the Boys On The Edge

As Rosie Kellagher, literary officer at Live Theatre explains, “following the success of Girls on the Verge, in October 2010, an evening of monologues written by men that looked at ordinary young women at extraordinary points in their lives, Boys on the Edge is a chance for audiences to explore the minds of young men.

“Writers Alison Carr, Bridget Deane and Laura Lindow have created three insightful monologues that will provide sadness, humour and poignant moments as we see these three young men manoeuvre their way through the minefield that is adulthood.”

In Alison Carr’s Clint, audiences will meet Clyde who has a secret that his social worker, gorgeous Jinny and even his Mam don’t know about. The secret’s name is Clint and Clint and Clyde are inseparable. Literally. Wherever Clyde goes, Clint goes. Only Clyde can communicate with Clint. But Clint is not imaginary: Clint is Clyde’s twin brother.

Ex gang member turned soldier, Johnny Dunlop is in trouble in I Am Legend by Bridget Deane. It was either the Army or jail for Johnny and he chose the Army. As the brochure says: everyone’s someone in the Army. But now Johnny’s platoon has been hit and he’s the only solider still alive. How long can he hold out?

Finally in Mine by Laura Lindow theatre goers will meet Joe who is a changeling. He is 14 and this is the first time this has happened to anyone. Anyone at all. Because he is entirely different from everyone and he’s sure of this. He is the quiet boy in the class, beautiful in an odd way, and impressionable. He can be sulky and demanding like a child, but he’s starting to realise that he is becoming something else. Above all, he’s watchable and he knows it.
