Is there any chance Miss Saigon will ever return to the West End?
I can't be alone in wanting to see it back in London alongside Les Mis

I agree, I'd love to see it back in the westend. I love the music but was too young to see it the first time around!

It would make sense to bring it back for the 2012 olympics. I hope it does.

Sadly (or maybe not...) I wasn't too young and did get to see the WE staging. I went under protest, as I didn't think it would be my 'thing' but was very impressed. Yes - I'd like to see this back again too, as I thoroughly enjoyed it and it would make a lovely change to some of the musical theatre productions that are out there at the moment (and really not for me).

I'm assuming for the even bigger masses of tourists that will descending on London. Wouldn't be surprised if they brought a lot more 'classics' back.

Well I'm glad to hear there is a possible window for either a tour or a return to the West End....
Does anyone know why it was cancelled in the first place?

I was really hoping they'd bring the last UK tour into the West End this autumn as it's 20 years since originally opened. I would have thought the touring version I saw a couple of years ago would go down really well in somewhere like the Noel Coward or somewhere fairly small.

I meant that I think producers will bring back past successes for the olympics with all the tourism and attention on London. I think Miss Saigon, Cats and Starlight Express are all possibilities.
There is actually a connection with the olympic games, a couple of scenes are set in Atlanta where the olympic games were held back in 1996....
I loved Miss Saigon at the Drury Lane! I can beleive itīs already 10 years since it closed. If thereīs a new production coming I hope itīs in a similar scale.

Great idea - only problem is that it is a big production and with most shows struggling at the moment perhaps it would be best to wait a year or so until this recession is over ( though it may not happen )
I agree that Miss Saigon is far superior to Les Miserables as well. But I can only imagine that it is far more expensive to stage and even in opening years it did not sell out at Drury Lane - I used to go quite often to see the Original casts during the couple of years. It was a grower through word of mouth like Spring Awakening would have been........and in those days shows were given more time.

You must have had a direct line to Cameron Mackintosh then. I had to book stupidly far in advance every time I saw it. Used to go and watch it and then book for the next time.
From my experience those early years were VERY well sold. The show had a stupid amount of coverage/publicity on UK TV when it opened.

Oh how I loved this show. I saw this in the WE several times, and on tour in Manchester. I still can't understand why it closed. It is right up there with all the greats.

Not entirely sure where you were sitting but I was at University in London during the early years of Miss Saigon, and we had subsidised theatre tickets. I could get tickets on the day most times i went to book, and they werent in the gods - stalls or first circle (can never remember which way round the Dress and the Grand are at Drury Lane!). I remember seeing it about 5 weeks running and never had a problem booking it.
It was the running costs and the lack of bums on seats that eventually killed it off. I rememeber going to see it in its final year several times, knowing that if I booked the then Ģ7.50 up-in-the-gods seats, I would be moved to the Grand Circle, Dress Circle or stalls.

was talking about Miss Saigon the other day with Hugh Maynard from Sister Act. He was in the first half of the 2nd UK tour as John and he was awesome. He said he had heard it was coming back and if so he may go up again for the role of John. I hope it does. I only ever saw it on tour and I think Ima Castro would be perfect as Kim. Where would it go though? If they kept it small like on the tour I think somewhere like the Aldwych or the Gielgud would be good or if they did a big revamped version maybe the Lyceum. I wouldnt really care so much about the venue so long as it came back with an awesome cast. I would be interested in seeing some of the old London effects as the tour ons for me were a bit, well ... crappy. i appreciated it tho cuz obviously touring productions do get scaled down lol

Anyone else think Miss Saigon tends to get a bad rep it doesn't deserve?
I will be the first to admit that I am not fond at all of some of the songs. Most notably, the love duets; they're cheesy as all hell. And it feels as if there are a million of them, even if there's only two. That saxophone song is the worst.
But as "mean" as that sounds, I don't dislike the show at all. I agree that it makes for a very emotional experience at the theater. I was lucky enough to catch both U.S. national tours, as well as the Broadway production twice. I saw the non-equity national tour in 2005, which I think is the same version that toured the U.K. ( correct me if I'm wrong). It wasn't awful but I agree that the animated helicopter effect left much to be desired. In fact, it was rather comical as it clearly was a blown up video of a toy chopper. XD
While the original production was most certainly thrilling, I found it to be too clunky. Everything worked with great precision and all but it had this way overblown feel to it that worked well for the large ensemble numbers, but dwarfed the actors in the more intimate scenes. I agree the helicopter effect lived up to its hype. I will never forget that first time I saw the show in Los Angeles, I was seated in the front row, and when that chopper came down, I swear I was in complete awe. I expected something impressive, but when you almost believe there is a freaking chopper landing onstage, now that's impressive!
Sadly, the effect looked somewhat cheap on Broadway. It was breathtaking on both national tours. It was a great thing to add to the show, but ultimately, I came away having been totally engrossed in the plot and found myself caring for the characters. A show that causes an audience to feel that way can't be all that bad, imho.

The original production was MAMMOTH. I think it might be one of the biggest national tours to have ever been launched in the United States (well, the ill-fated 1st U.S. national tour of Sunset Blvd. might've been even bigger). It took 38 semi tractor trailers to transport the show's 1st NT. Compare that with the 3rd U.S. NT of
Les Mis, which only required 8 trucks, and the 3rd U.S. tour of Phantom uses 28.

Miss Saigon was a wonderful show and I would love to see it again live. I have seen it 3 times (2 at Drury Lane and once on national tour). It is simply beautiful and makes me cry everytime - even on CD!
Bring it back I say! It is far superior to the Lloyd Webber shows and even pips Les Mis (although I love that too!)
Fingers crossed we will see it again one day.....

I've seen Ima Castro play Kim in Miss Saigon on 2 national tours. She was wonderful. I think she must be in her 30s now and with the greatest respect is probably too old to play Kim again. Any ideas what she's up to these days. Is she still married to David Shannon?
