Backdrifter

I've seen this mentioned in a thread for another play. I was wondering if anyone else has seen it. I saw it last weekend and almost left at the interval it was so tedious. But I hung on in case the 2nd act suddenly improved things, but it didn't. It depicts a bullying man forcing his two sons, in a spectacularly grotty little flat in East London, to daily re-enact their family history in rural Cork. It's performed with great energy and the set has a terrible beauty, but the idea quickly wore thin and became horribly overstretched. The inclusion of a robotically smiling checkout girl from Tesco returning some lost shopping (how does she know where to find them?) grated even more. It was one of those occasions when I was immensely relieved to get out of the theatre.

I'm so happy to read your post. I was bemoaning the fact that I won't get to see this show but now I'm suddenly okay about it.

Yep, I hated it too - the story within the story was too long and hysterical (though fortunately I hadn't got round to reading the reviews so I did have about 20 minutes of intrigue working out what was going on - thougb had I read Backdrifter's post beforehand I wouldn't even had that to interest me!). I never really sussed who everyone was in the backstory but can't say I cared. But there were a lot of teens in the audience who seemed enthusiastic to judge by the conversation in the loo and at least 40 people (not all teens) did a standing ovation. So clearly it worked for some people.
