I know I shoudln't plug but I will...we are now into our penultimate week of rehearsal for the John Caird version of Jane Eyre the Musical and it is going great guns. A fantastic big score that really reflects the tone of the novel. It should also be great doing it at The Bridwell - an almost perfect venue (well would be if it had a revolve and 15 fly bars!!)...very atmospheric.

Anyway, if you are in London and fancy catching a real Xmassy show (OK a few people die but it all ends well) then pop along to The Bridewell 2-13 December www.sideshowtheatre.co.uk.

"Despite my cynicism (after a million novels with ‘the musical’ placed after their name), Jane Eyre is genuinely touching, heartfelt and inspiring. John Caird’s book provides suitable segues between the numbers that are so emotively written by Paul Gordon. Early pieces such as “Forgiveness” will find you empathising and applying Jane’s strong spirit to your own life, while fastidious numbers like “Painting His Portrait” carry the action along."

"Brought together well by director Philip Halpin and excellent fullness of sound orchestrated by Stephen Day (with an orchestral arrangement on the balcony above the stage), its not what you would expect from the Bridewell. Emotive numbers set off by the actors’ ability to ‘fill the room"

"An inspiring story to take from, and a challenging novel to adapt, it’s thankful that Gordon and Caird pulled it off so successfully and this interpretation does it justice.

" the execution is excellent and the writing is good.If you’re a fan of the book or love strong women characters, it’s definitely worth a trip to check this venture out."

**** 4 Star review via Remotegoat.com

Charlotte Bronte's Gothic novel Jane Eyre has every single 1847-staple needed for a story of hard-done-by innocents. The heroine starts off life as an abandoned child in an orphanage run by sadists on bleak moors; her best friend Helen Burns dies of consumption in her arms; and she ends up working for an employer with an insane wife living in the attic who regularly tries to kill him. (The only Bgrade staple missing here is an evil scientist bent on creating a monster or an evil twin turning up, but Bronte probably didn't have time to cram them in as well.)

Fortunately most melodramas are custom-made for musicals, as they are never short of a situation just perfect for a heartbreaking chorus or plaintive solo.

Bronte's protagonist Jane (Heather Longman) is an intelligent but plain girl, who despite being thrown into an orphanage by her aunt, supports herself by becoming a teacher, and then succeeds in getting a job as a governess at Thornfield Hall.

Longman's vocals are excellent, and she duets perfectly with the boisterous Mr Rochester (Lee Thompson) and his motherly housekeeper Mrs Fairfax (Lesley Curtis). There's a welcome touch of humour with Mrs Fairfax who creates an excellent musical comedy duo with Jane. Watch especially for the two ladies' hilarious tea-and-sugarlump scene, which seems to have been borrowed from The Importance of Being Earnest's snappy comedy.

Jane's archenemy, the fortunehunter Blanche Ingram who also has an eye for Jane's beloved Mr Rochester, is a brilliant creation by Hollie Anne Cartwright. A sugary monster hiding behind a decorative mask of blonde ringlets and blonde lace, Blanche is a mixture of decorative idleness and bitchiness. She looks down on all governesses and Jane in particular as a subhuman species. If Roald Dalh's spoilt-child creation Veruca Salt had grown up and escaped the Chocolate Factory, she would be a fictitious twin to Blanche.

The musical uses some smart stage narrative, with aspects of Jane's life being portrayed by both a child actress (Ciara Halkes and Stacey Cockram) while simultaneously her adult self looks on and comments. Although stagy, this gives a good contrast of the hotheaded child and the mature adult.

The Bridewell's trapdoor and spiral staircase allow for frequent dramatic stage movements that more conventional stages can't pull off, and director Philip Halpin makes best use of it. Bertha Mason, Mr Rochester's mad wife (Monica Salvi) soars up the staircase in her torn wedding dress, and the evil John Reed (Phillip Rowlands) pops up the trapdoor to torment the young Jane in best evil demon king mode.

The novel is Gothic and overdone, but intelligent stagework and the actors' enthusiasm and skill sweep you along.
