The play is billed as a comedy and I did have one of the best laughs of recent times..nothing to do with the play. We couldn't find our seats at first because the numbering on Row A has been confused so we were leaning over to find the numbers. There was what looked like a panel of black plastic round the stage. Suddenly my fellow theatre goer tripped and ....it wasn't plastic, it was water. Someone appeared with white towels but not for him, but to wipe the stage! He sat gamely with a wet leg, soaked sock and shoe all through the 1 hour 25 and we haven't stopped laughing all the way home.
The play: first night I think and a bit rough, words galloped and toppled over, not sure why they move from one seat to another kind of thing. Anna Chancellor a joy to watch - it's all in her eyes - the blokes, Tom Burke and Owen Teale need, I felt, to sink into the roles more, work out what is going on between them more - you know, good old fashioned stuff. Early days I suppose but then as a play it isn't worth going to twice. It doesn't break your heart like that production with Kelly Reilly .....but I won't forget it in a hurry.

There is a slight possibility I'm there, too, as I am seeing my friend from 15 to 21 Oct. However, I don't like Strindberg and what I've read so far about Creditors I still prefer seeing Kenneth in Ivanov. Anyway I'll let you know if I come to the Donmar

Having seen both this week, I would go for Ivanov. Unless you love Anna Chancellor. Wish she was in more stuff - Nora?

Of course, I wouldn't expect anything less, lol. When are you going to KB? I'
ll see my friend later today (she is here right now although with a delay due to the airport disaster on Thursday....)and we are going to talk about my possible stay with her in October.
Thanks Lynette, for the advice. :-). I wonder why only so few people have posted a review of Creditors - I found three including yours

I saw this last week and (not knowing the play) was impressed with all concerned, but only on reading this thread did I recall that the water was there -can't remember it featuring at all during the play and now wonder why? bearing in mind that with the rather splendid hotel interior, soundscape and numerous references to the ferry, you are not likely to forget that they are on a Swedish island? and (no disrespect to the performers) the audience is hardly likely to rush the stage?

Rickman explained the other night that the water was indeed intended to remind you that you were close to the sea. And we had someone step in it too and sit with a soaked leg. Rickman said that it had happened a few times, but they had not yet had a total immersion.

Thanks for this explanation Alexandra - rather OTT as far as I am concerned!

Enjoyed this play / production immensely. Noticed there was a sign as you walked in warning about the water. I didn't mind it there at all. The actors must all be settled into their roles by now as they were all three fantastic as was the direction, set, costume and of course the play itself.

I loved the actors (so good to see Tom Burke again), enjoyed the set, and the man who put his foot in 'the sea'. One silly thing was that the two chaise lounge (sp) either side of the stage meant that the actors faces were obscured, and I saw a lot of cream fabric and could only imagine what the actors' expressions might have been. I wonder if the furniture has been moved now?

Good performances all round as you'd expect as usual, but the play left me cold. The furniture I guess is in the same place - I'd say anyone sitting stage right would have just seen the back of Tom Burke's head for most of the first act.
