I went to watch Wicked on Wednesday 11th (I think) July. Halfway through the performance there had to be a change due to Kerry Ellis suddenly getting taken ill and having to go to hospital. Does anyone know why this is? I have been trying to find out for a while now. I have to admit they were both pretty good. I loved the show and the songs.

Dear, oh dear! It's the weekend and no one's supervising the computers in the juvenile detention centre.

Katy, are you asking why people get ill? Or why people get taken to hospital when they are ill? Or why producers put an understudy on when the principal actor falls sick? Or why the understudy was as good as the principal? Or why you loved the show and songs?

Some of these questions have answers.

It's amazing how rude people are on here. There's no need for sarcastic answers. If you haven't got anything relevant to say don't bother posting at all!
Alexandra
Ah, but then older people with nothing better to do at the weekend wouldn't be able to show off their devastatingly sharp minds and incisive analytical skills and pedagogic (if astonishingly presumptuous) abilities to edit other people's posts.

I didn't see this at the time, but reading it now it's quite obvious to me that Katy was asking if anyone knew anything more about Kerry Ellis's sudden indisposition. Katy, just ignore rude people and feel free to post again if you feel like it. But you've probably gone off to somewhere less pompous and more welcoming - I don't blame you.

Thank you Alexandra! I also didn't see this post at the time it was posted but I can not believe how sarcastic, patronising, pompous and down right rude Orchestrator has been to Katy!! I personally think he owes her an apology - posted on here! Please carry on posting Katy, it is perfectly clear to me what you were asking in your post, unfortunately I don't know the answer either but I am also quite curious.

Quite curious about something that happened about three-and-a-half months ago and that Katy took over two months to ask about here? Obviously it wasn't considered, by the members of this board, interesting at the time of the indisposition nor at the time of Katy's post. I'm sorry for the intemperate and patronising nature of my response to Katy. She was absolutely right to post as she did.
Alexandra
See, when someone says sorry it makes me want to give them a cuddle. Don't be alarmed, Orchestrator, it's probably just motherhood. smile.gif

Hear hear. I have commented before on this & that comments on spelling/grammar/construction etc are not called for. It seems we must all watch our p's& q's or suffer the withering criticisms of the Orchestrators of this world.

Actually, I quite liked Orchestrator's initial response.

I don't think the spelling and grammar was foremost concern - more the fact that the message was posted with some rather interesting formatting that's certainly not required in forums such as this. I'm surprised she didn't consider putting a WordArt in too.

Personally, I think it's more discourteous to make posts with such large attending-demanding, eyes-bleeding-now font sizes. Just because it's a bit bigger doesn't make us want to help any more. now does it? So, kudos to Orchestrator - if maybe a tad harsh (join the club) - and a tap on the wrist for Katy, who should pay more attention to online etiquette.

i cant beleive how rude this place is all i did was ask a question god i didnt realise it was gonna be like this i will go else where where there are less rude people!

You ask a question on the 21st September and come back in mid March to make a response? Over two months since the last entry on this thread?

Katy needs to discover punctuation. Look. There it is again; marvellous, useful thing it is.

Then she could move on the phrasing and sentences.

I hate the fact that some people on here seem to think everybody has a PHD in English, well news for the few on here that obviously have...thats not the case!

People have many different factors that may hinder how they write or construct sentences, but i guess for you few things like dyslexia or any other learning abilities (not saying that you do katy!) are non existent in the world...but how stupid of me how can people with varying learning abilities actually have an interest in theatre.

Katy don't let people like that put you off coming to the forum...generally the board is a good place to ask questions etc, but there are a few people that like to think they are above everyone else!

Enjoy

It's not difficult to tell the difference between people who have a genuine difficulty with language, people for whom English is a foreign language, people who make the odd typo, and people who just don't care enough about their readership to write properly. It's disingenuous to suggest otherwise. If someone cares so little about their opinions that they can't even take an extra second or two to write them correctly then it's probably not worth writing them at all.

It's not as if people are being asked to display university-level knowledge here. This is basic stuff that everyone mature enough to use an Internet-connected computer should know. A PhD in English? Some of the messages I've seen would disgrace an eight year old. There's a real "don't bother being right; being wrong is just as good" attitude around these days.

It's essentially selfishness: "My time is so important that I can't waste any of it typing clearly, and it's none of my concern if I waste your time because it takes you longer to work out what I'm saying".

You're the main man, Matthew! I couldn't have put it better.

Hello.

I realise that I am very late in joining this thread, but I have only just discovered 'What's On Stage'.

I fully agree that punctuation and grammar are important factors. They enable a piece of writing to be immediately understood.

I feel though, that the practice of belittling and deriding a person with poor grammar is likely to be counterproductive. Would not a kinder approach be better?

Kindness and politeness are also very important attributes...and I would argue that those in possession of advanced literary skills should also embrace these qualities.

Katy's post may not have been well punctuated, but it was polite and inquisitive. A friendly response (of which I note, there were a few), may have encouraged her to return to the discussion board regularly. This would have enabled her to gain knowledge from reading the many well punctuated posts that exist here.

My best wishes to everyone.

Unfortunately the advent of texts, instant messages etc mean that many people really don't know how to write, punctuate etc. It's really not their fault - The educational system is to blame. And to those people who say it isn't important I have to tell you, as someone who regularly has to trawl through job applications, it really, really is. If an application is prefaced by a hopeless introductory letter that application is already going to the bottom of the pile. It is harsh but that's the way employers sift applications.
Hey, but don't worry! According to government statistics the GCSE results show that everyone is getting more intelligent every year!
So why am still worried? sad.gif
