went to see cabaret again last night and kim was off, and rebecca bainbridge was on as sally bowles - she was stunning! it was spot on apart from james dreyfus who is far to camp and over the top bordering on panto to play the emcee who is supposed to be sinister and james was far from that!
rebecca bainbridge had a vulnerability to her sally that kim doesnt have, and also the rough edge which kim's performance didnt have. her voice was amazing particularly in 'cabaret' at the end of the show
dont know if kim is sick or on holiday, but it would be worth trying to see rebecca!
it sounds as though i didnt enjoy it with kim - i did, just rebecca gave a different interpretation to her sally and i like seeing understudies for that reason

Aww Kim must be ill she hasn't got any holiday, only 4 weeks left!
Interesting to hear about Rebecca though, I had wondered what she'd be like as Sally, i've seen a couple of other understudies but I love Kim's performances

She's leaving in four weeks?
Does anyone have any gossip on her replacement?
Or...is the show going to close?

Yeah last day, well for her and i've no doubt a lot of other people is 29th September. No idea about replacements, they must be sorting it now though, but it's definetly running until March 08

I'd imagine it'll be quite a lot of them because people like James, Michael, Harriet and I think it's about 6 of the ensemble will have been there a year so i'd imagine they'd want to stop now, and Kim decided only to do 6 months and i'd imagine Honor and Matthew wont be staying either

Any news on who will be taking over from Kim? Maybe Rebecca Bainbridge will be stepping up, the same way Kelly Price did in Guys and Dolls. From the above review it sounds like she's more than capable.

Yeah, she's more than capable of playing the role full time, but remember, this is Kenwright we're talking about...

Don't know if this is publc knowledge yet, but the new Sally is Amy Nuttall. And Julian Clary is taking over the role of the Emcee.
Barry James and Angela Richards are the new Shultz and Schnieder.

I'd heard about Julian Clary...meh.
but are you serious about Amy Nuttall? That was literally my dream casting! If it's true...EXCITEMENT.

Ooh, well I didn't particularly love Rebecca Bainbridge - I only have Anna MM to compare her to, but I found her a little unsubtle and unable to grasp the real complexities of the role and the personality.
She also did a bizarre note at the end of Mein Herr!
Sadly I didn't get to see kim!
I hope Julian doesn't take over as the Emcee - he can't sing for toffee!!
Why can't we have someone younger and sexier as the Emcee like they did on Broadway (and someone that is a great singer please!!)

Oh no

When have you heard him sing?
Can he act?? I don't know if I've ever seen him act in anything...
I agree with that suggestion. You can see how Kenwright's trying to go down the "James Dreyfus" route but I'd rather something a bit different now...a la Raul Esparza. Mmmmhmm.
Although I don't think it's necessary for Emcee to be a great singer. Just...not a horrible one.

I've heard Julian sing loads of times - I've been a fan for years, and he has no range and can barely hold a tune = and he knows it, he used to use it for comedy effect!

Good grief! Julian Clary? I'm a big fan of his comedy stuff but that's what he should stick to. After trying his hand at presenting and then writing a novel, the man should know his limits.

Saw Rebecca Bainbridge play Sally Bowles on Sat night and I have to agree with the 1st post. She was spot on. Saw Anna MM many months ago and I've got to say I thought she was magnificent, but on Saturday Rebecca topped her. Fanatsic voice. A raw edge to her character, and then utter vunerabilty at the end. Her Cabaret was chilling - especially the manic beating of her stomach at the end (Sally is of course pregnant at the time). An incredibly intense performance. Well worth seeing!

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Rebecca - but can I correct you on one point, Sally isn't pregnant - she had an abortion which cost her her beloved fur coat.

Saw the cast change of Cabaret tonight. A very strong show! Barry James and Angela Richards were superb as Shultz and Frau Schenider. Julian Clary was a little weak. Maybe this will inprove with time. Rebecca Bainbridge was playing Sally Bowles. She really lived up to the earlier threads. A fantastic performance. She actually made me cry at the end.

I totally agree with the comments on Miss Bainbridge. What a star! It's such a shame she didn't get the part full time. I've seen all the other Sally's in this production and I think she's got by far the best voice. Her performance in Cabaret was mesmerising.
Does anyone know what she's got lined up next? Is she leaving in March?

I still haven't seen Rebecca but I thought AMM was excellent. Her acting was breathtaking. Her understudy Kaisa Hammarlund was also fantastic and it goes to show the talent that is hidden in the chorus of most shows.

Saw Rebecca tonight playing Sally Bowles. V impressive. Spoke to the box office staff and apparently Amy Nuttall is onm holiday till next Tues. Well worth a visit to see Rebecca. Saw the show way back in Oct with Anna Maxwell Martin and I have to say, I wasn't too keen, but watching it again has totally changed my opinion on this new revival.
Tonight's performance was fantastic.
good show

I agree with you. I saw last night's show and thought it was fantastic. After all the criticism of Julian Clary I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised by his performance. He was really funny although I have to say I still preferred James Dreyffus. Saying that though, Rebecca Bainbridge was on last night and she was extremely impressive in place of Amy Nuttal. She's got a fantastic voice and she plays the part with a great deal of honesty and depth. Well worth seeing while she's still on!
