Hi. Off to New York in October and was wondering what shows we should see. The only one I probably really want to see is Legally Blonde. We were thinking of getting tickets for a show from the Tkts booth e.g. for Curtains but does anyone know what those seats are normally like i.e. are they decent seats? Was also thinking about the Fantasticks. Any opinions??

Don't know about the Fantasticks. Saw it many years ago and it was delightful. Jersey Boys with the original cast is worth every dollar, but it's not at TKTS. Try www.broadway.com
Curtains is usually on sale at TKTS. Go to: tdf.org and check the listings. You won't know about the seats until the purchase but they're usually decent, not top. Best place to buy discounted TKTS is at the Seaport, the lines are shorter and it opens earlier.
If you're interested in exploring new plays, Mauritius opens in Oct. Manhattan Theatre Club.
And don't forget to walk over to the Top of the Tower (Beekman Tower at 49th and 1st) for nightcaps.
Great views of the city lights.

When we went out there in feb booked a few shows from discounts found on www.broadwaybox.com usually got good seat from offers on there..
Chorus line seats from tkts weren't as good.

There are hardly any bad seats. Go - Curtains is a great show!

Coincidentally I've just seen Legally Blonde, Jersey Boys & Curtains in NYC this past week and thought all were fantastic. Also saw Mary Poppins which wasn't (technically superb but soul-less IMHO). The queues at TKTS were a bit off putting so I waited till later in the day and probably didn't get as good seats as I might have done. Ended up paying full price for Curtains, used a BroadwayBox discount code for Legally Blonde and got standing room for Jersey Boys.

I've seen Curtains before and would second the opinion that there aren't many bad seats - even sitting near the back of the circle gave me a fantastic view. Standing room for Jersey Boys is also great because you can dance along (if you're so inclined). Legally Blonde has good views from the back of the orchestra stalls because the seats are nicely graduated.

Hope you enjoy whatever you see!

I just got back from New York where I saw Rent, Hairspray and Wicked
Saw Legally Blonde the trip before and have to say I think it is well worth seeing, it was really good

Just came back from 6 days away in New York and caught 4 shows

Truly depends what you're after...........

The 4 shows we were told never appear tkts were Lion King, Jersey Boys, Young Frankenstein and Wicked.

Although availability on Sat night at tkts is much less than other nights. So try and see the more popular shows midweek

Saw

Young Frankenstein - currently in previews, not enough book, too similar to the producers in formula - a good night out but the big story in the US right now is that tix are now going for $450 each. It's not worth that - wait until it's slicker or reworked or both....and cheaper. Great performaces tho altho Megan Mullally would benefit from realising there are others on stage with her.

Curtains - Fantastic show, lovely old-fashioned feel with modern sensibilities - a bit like crazy for you meets a murder mystery. Hyde Pierce is wonderful. All the leads are excellent. And the most beautiful tenor voice as Aaron.

Color Purple - Fantastically talented cast especially montego glover, fantaias understudy !- not my favourite production - great if you can put up with the audience convincing themselves and each other it's better then it is !! still had me in tears tho ! don't expect to see fantasia - we cancelled our tickets 3 times on fantasia no show days and the theatre advised us to see the show now because the likelihood is that we wouldnt see her. The box office seemed exasperated at fantasias lack of attendance. Because her name is above the title you will get a refund if she does not appear. Even from the tkts booth - altho wait til the next morning and go back to the theatre - don't lose a night in new york because of it

Last and less least

Spring Awakening- See it !! Nothing like it around - Just won 8 tonys including best musical Don't think it will take over the world like it's conceptual brother Rent - so see it while you can. Very different - You will love it or you will hate it, but you won't know unless you see it. Little tip - we got caught out by availability on Sat night - all that was left were standing "seats" at the back of the stalls. $30 each - absolute bargain and apart a little changing of feet time will fly by !!

There are so many great shows in New York. Don't see anything that you can see in the West End soon tho. It would be a waste !!

By the way we heard good things about Legally Blonde and Great things about the Fantasticks !!

I went to see the Fantasticks and it was well for want of a better word Fantastic. Julie Craig who played the girl was gorgeous in every sense of the word and definatley someone to look out for in the future. Tom Jones was spectacular. I would definatly recommend it for anyone who is heading to NYC, we got Sat Night tickets from the TKTS booth for $36... total bargain... See it.

We are going to New York at the end of May. Have booked Rent and was planning on booking The Color Purple. Now that is closing what would you recommend?

I know its not a musical, but November with Nathan Lane, is supposed to be a hoot.

Will look into that one

The must see new play on Broadway is August:Osage County which is currently the hot favourite to win the Tony and the Pulitzer. If you see only one play, that's it. November is often funny and Nathan Lane is good but the play is weak and not up to par for David Mamet.

Little Mermaid got mixed reviews, except for the set which every critic loathed. Young Frankenstein is passably entertaining but not a patch on The Producers in any respect. Passing Strange just got the first strong reviews for a new musical this season but I personally wasn't blown away by it. It's a hybrid rock concert/musical. Some people love the Latin influenced In The Heights but I don't think the slice of life book works that well and the score is only mildly successful. The other new musicals, Catered Affair and Cry Baby haven't opened yet and out of town reviews weren't raves. The likely hot ticket for musicals this season is for the Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific which just started previews. It has a terrific cast, a full orchestra and the same director and design team who put together Light in the Piazza.

From last season, people either love or hate Spring Awakening, the show that swept the Tony awards. Curtains is an old-fashioned musical with some hoary jokes, a variable Kander and Ebb score and some good dance numbers. Legally Blonde is rather frenetic for my taste and has a disappointing score but it's a very slick and energetic show and seems to appeal to many. The long-running Off-Broadway show Altar Boyz is fun for a discount ticket price - there's not enough substance to justify a full price ticket.
