Hi Guys

As some of you know Im off on my 1st adventure to NYC, I have pretty much got my shows booked and paid for but stuck on which show to see on the Sat Eve

I have wittled it down to either Waiting for Godot or Exit the King, have any of you seen these productions on broadway? Both have casts that I would love to see live, both are surrealist plays by authors I like! so as you can see im a bit stuck.

It may help if you know what else I am seeing, looking at dates etc I could see both and not see Mary Poppins, but I didnt catch MP either in London or on Tour you help would be appreciated as always!

I say Exit the King. Mostly because I'm more than a little in love with Lauren Ambrose, but also because there are generally more opportunities to catch productions of Godot in the world. Sure, they're not all this one, but still.

Hell, you've got a few musicals booked; do Exit the King *and* Waiting for Godot, then catch Mary Poppins at a later point, as I'm sure you inevitably will be able to. Like Beauty and the Beast, I suspect a Mary Poppins tour will always be waiting just around the corner.

But then, I've seen Mary Poppins (three times, and I'm not quite sure how that happened O_o), which could well be affecting my opinion, and if it's still Scarlett Strallen, then it'd be TOTALLY worth catching while you're out there.

In order of personal preference:
Exit the King
Mary Poppins
Waiting for Godot

I personally would drop MP, but if you're keen on it, then drop Godot.

Good decision, I have to say I was very disappointed with Mary Poppins when I saw it back in February. With the exception a stunning performance from Scarlett Strallen, the rest of the cast were very weak and Scarlett alone couldn't save the show from becoming a bit of a bore fest.

Were you not tempted at all by 9 To 5? That's the one I'm dying to see right now!

all brilliant for different reasons, couldnt get tickets for Exit for the day I wanted so seeing Mary Poppins instead

Well here is my quick summery of my Theatre in NYC

Sat

Waiting for Godot - Studio 54

This was a great way to start the week, fantastic performances from most slightly underwhelmed by John Goodman, but Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin as Didi and Gogo were sublime!

Sunday

Hair - Al Hirschfeld Theatre

Great Cast and very energetic, have never seen hair before and enjoyed the amount of audience interaction in this. Well worth a visit.

Shrek the Musical - The Broadway Theatre

If you have the family with you then this is great fun, enjoyable performances from all and some really creative direction - set was brilliant and yes Sutton Foster wasn't performing!

Monday

Reasons to be Pretty (La Bute) - Lyceum Theatre

Personally this is his strongest play in his beautiful trilogy (the others being Fat Pig and Shape of Things) the cast give great performances and the show has some great face slaps for the audience.

Tuesday

In the Heights - Richard Rodgers Theatre

Best thing I saw all week, emotionally touching, hilarious and some of the best choreography I have seen, catchy tunes - one of the only Tony Winners in recent years for Best Musical that I can honestly see why it won!

Wednesday

Mary Poppins - New Amsterdam

Sadly this was the biggest dissapointment - the understudy was on for Mary (Catherine Brunell) and she was great, but the show lacked any energy and Adam Fiorentino as Bert was atrocious, the accent made Dick Van Dyke look like an actually cockney. Best thing about the show was the set!

Guys & Dolls - Nederlander

Des Macnuff has directed another winner, very slick and fantastic performances all round - the set was stunning, its a pity that we had Guys and Dolls in the west end recently as this would do well over here and personally knocked socks out of the Donmar production.

What a super time you have had. I envy you the Godot, sounds much better than 'ours' and I could have a production of Guys and Dolls every year - it's the best!

I agree about Guys and Dolls one of my all time fav hollywood musicals!

Aw that's so lame that you didn't get Scarlett Strallen as Mary Poppins, she was the only thing I liked about the show!
