I first saw "That Bad Eartha" in the film New Faces, when I was a schoolboy. I thought she was stunning, and I have never changed that opinion of her. I saw the film over and over again, and bought all her albums which I would play over and over again. Then, whenever I had the chance to see her on the stage, or in cabaret, I would be just as enthralled by this unique performer. I was fortunate to have met her on a couple of occasions and found her utterly enchanting, and just as glamorous, even up to the age of 80. Her performance in Follies was very special, but then so were all the stage shows I saw her in, many of which were her own one-woman shows. She was also very generous in giving her time to appear in charity concerts, including one a few years ago in Brighton. She had been asked by her friend Dora Bryan if she would appear in it, and she flew over from USA immediately to be in it. As always, she just stole the show, as she did in another charity show at the London Palladium a few years later.
Eartha was also a great dancer, having been a part of the famous Katharine Dunham troupe that toured the world, and this really showed in everything she did, in whatever medium. Like all great singers, she was also a very fine actress, and gave memorable performances in the films Anna Lucasta and St Louis Blues, as well as some television plays.
Compare her with some of today's so-called singers, totally lacking in personality, subtlety and vocal skills. There never has been, and never will be anyone like Eartha - a great singer, dancer, actress and author, and a great lady.
