Nothing on Whatsonstage on this yet, so here's the BBC's coverage:

A true great and a very modest man despite his huge talents.

I remember The Stage (that bastion of in depth critical writing and accuracy!) having a photo of the new cast of Me and My Girl opening that week, a good many years ago. 'Opening tonight, Bonnie Langford and Paul Schofield in Me and My Girl'. I'm sure DAVID Schofield gave a magnificent performance but I'm sad that we were actually denied Paul S's Lambeth Walk.
Sorry to see him go. A Man for All seasons is indeed a great film.

How sad - a truly great actor. Apart from his faultless & definitive performance in Man for all Seasons I particulary remember 2 great RSC performances - Macbeth & the camp gay man in Staircase. Also Christopher Hampton's Savages at the Royal Court. A great loss.

A remarkable actor and a modest, unassuming man. His voice was utterly beautiful. A Man For All Seasons is my favourite film and his portrayal of Sir Thomas More affected me very deeply.

I was only watching him two nights ago in the film of Anna Karenina.

R.I.P. Paul Scofield. He will be greatly missed.

Such a loss, one of the last great actors from that era. So many memorable, beautiful performances.

Rest in peace.

A Great actor- I had the privilge of sharing the stage with him at the Old Vic, in "The Captain of Kopenick", in the early '70's.A great loss.

The best actor I have seen in 40+ years of theatregoing. I shall always remember his truly moving performances as Uncle Vanya and Sir Thomas More.

Most of Paul Scofield's obituaries mention his amazing voice. This is certainly what I remember most about him: you could be sitting in the last row of the balcony, and when Scofield whispered on stage it was as though he was sitting next to you. Quite incredible.
I have a little problem maybe one of you could help me with. I know Scofield played Salieri in Amadeus on the London stage in 1979. I also know I saw him in the play, but I wasn't in London in 1979, I was in New York. I have scanned all the obituary material I could find on Google, and nowhere do I see a mention of him playing Salieri on the New York stage. Does anyone know when that was? I don't THINK I'm going ga-ga!
Thanks!
