Front Row Dress - completely agree with your blog review for this. The Telegraph and the Guardian gave it 4 star reviews though especially about the play. I must have missed something, to me it's like the Emperors New Clothes!

For my money it's massively over rated. Yes it's fun and reasonably clever and I think it's a good score, but it's not a patch on The Producers. That was a genuinely laugh out loud show, cleverly scripted and not relying on foul language for a quick laugh.

As a musical for people who don't like musicals , this is great, but it's really a modern day example of fabulous advertising and promotion over content IMO.

Do a free gig then, I realise it would be a logistical nightmare and it's the sort of stupid fanboy suggestion that would never happen but I do think she would get a lot of good PR out of a bad situation if she did.

Have to say though, at The Tailor Made Man (Arts Theatre), the ever present atmospheric fog from the smoke machine really didn't help!

One type of coughing I hate is the psychosomatic coughing that results from any use of smoke effects on stage, even when (as in most cases) the "smoke" is physiologically incapable of causing anyone to cough. I was involved with one show where I was using a rather leaky dry ice machine, and I'd be in a room with dense fog billowing around me with no problems at all while in front of the curtain the first wisp of fog caused a barrage of coughs, even from people well above the level of the fog. I still don't know whether it's a genuine psychosomatic reaction or a conscious one to say "I can see the smoke" in the same way some people will make a point of laughing loudly so everyone knows they understood a joke.

I really enjoyed this. It’s absurdly quirky, funny, charming and is well produced. I found the first half to me more engaging than the second and this might be due to the fact that Paul Nicholas had a much bigger role in the second! – is it just me or is he a really poor actor? I found the court scene (this scene basically hangs off PN) to be superfluous and PN’s song to be arduous. But maybe if someone like Roger Allam was in the role it would be different?

Jerry Herman’s score has got some great songs in and boy is he a tunesmith. Betty Buckley as the crazy cat lady (last time I saw her she had a dead ape dumped on a shelf! ) is really quite wonderful and is worth the ticket price alone - I really wish she performed in the UK more often. it was a very good night out at the theatre and i'm still humming the tunes :)

#251484 Amusing Banner Advert

I was highly amused by the banner advert I just got on the main page and the forum:

"Good at sport? You could be cut out for a career in construction!"

At the risk of stereotyping, have they ever met anyone who posts on a theatre messageboard??  :)

We saw this back in November, like you thought Will Young was superb and think he was well cast!
He might have been better as Sally
