When Sonia Freidman explained why that were bringing over Gavin Creel and Jared Gartner, and not using UK actors she said "it became clear early on during the audition process on London that we needed the real thing".  Am therefore assuming that this week she's either eating her words or standing in the foyer offering refunds!

Obviously not - as having seen both Gavin and Ashley Day - there's not much to call between them although they play the part differently - certainly wouldn't consider one the real thing and one not.

Why do producers feel the need to say such ridiculous things in order to justify decisions?  I'm sure that she always wanted a long run and therefore a recast - presumably with local actors. Given that the prices are going up and up this means she expects people to pay more for not seeing the real thing!!

An apology to British actors including the majority of the current cast might be in order.  How about it Sonia?

I saw Ashley Day on Wednesday and he was fantastic. In my eyes he most certainly deserves to take over the role when Gavin Creel leaves.

They are thinking of transferring The Audience to another theatre (the Geilgud has Private Lives booked in) but with another actress playing  HM as Helen Mirren has other commitments. I think the box office bonanza is almost completley due to Mirren reprising her Oscar winning film performance on stage. Could any other actress play it so well and have the same box office potential? Answers and suggestions on a postcard?

Personally i don't think any other actress could pull it off like Helen Mirren, the play is selling out because of her, the same at the Noel Coward with Judi Dench. I think the producers would lose their profits currently being made if it transferred without Helen Mirren - it might do ok, but I don't think it would have the house full board out like they do at every performance now.

Just got back from seeing the Dreamgirls US Tour - I can't decide how I feel about the show on stage, in one way I thought it was great but then it didn't blow me away like I expected. I really really like the film so I was expecting the show to be even better.

Has there ever been a UK professional version? I don't ever remember seeing that there was? If not do we think it would work in the UK on stage?

I think some of the songs are fantastic and I like all the big 'argument' songs which work on stage well as well as the standard songs like dreamgirls, I am telling you etc. I did think that the show was a little bit long though and that the plot was tightened up a bit in the film

Any thoughts?

I saw the original production on Broadway all those years ago which was wonderful. There has been talk on and off of it coming to the West End for many years, never to materialise other than a concert version at the Royal Festival Hall (which I missed). About 15 years when I worked at the Prince of Wales Theatre we had a visit from London producer Adam Spiegel along with some American producers with the plan of putting it in to the POW - and again, it didn't happen. I knew they were coming and at what time and so I waited until they crossed Coventry Street and then I pressed play on the speaker system we had to play music from the canopy outside the theatre and played "Move - you're steppin on my heart" just to try and make them feel at home.  A couple of years ago I saw the new touring production of Dreamgirls at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York which I thought was wonderful, the performances were great and the whole thing electric and simply staged compared to what i remembered from the original Broadway show, However, it did not look at all like it was a touring production and would not have looked out of place in any Broadway house. At that time, the producers had announced that the tour would be coming to London's West End, and sadly, for whatever reason it didn't. i'd love it to come to town now, come on Mr Spiegel, think about it again!

I think it sells quite alot of "spure of the moment" in person tickets though to be fair...

The quote in the newspapers a few weeks ago was "the truth is that we (Viva Forever) are sold out until June. Hmmmmmmm....well as we know you can look at the live seat plans on the ATG website to see just how "sold out" it is (or not in almost all cases), and now last night there was a large ad for the show in the Evening Standard with "Spring ticket sale" Mon - Fri Top price £39.50 March, £45.00 April, and £49.50 May. No comment.

Hands up who thinks that'll go well? Anybody? -tumbleweed-
Is that Ealing or Fulham Broadway? Can't see it making the big white way.
