#262173 The Hired Man

Julie Atherton & David Hunter are INCREDIBLE.
This production packs so much intense emotion & tells an epic story in an intimate & immersive venue. The cast & musician-actors are phenomenal.

I think we all knew it would get mixed reviews - 1 star from the Daily Mail, should we expect anything less from that pile of old tosh!
I doubt whether the producers are bothered as it is being so cleverly marketed that its a sure fire hit for quite a while.

Do those of you who are old enough (like me) remember the reviews for Les Mis. They were dire and its still going.

I saw BOM in preview, totally loved it so and going to book again.

Does anyone know who might be at the opening night? They already had quite a few big names at red nose day last week (Paul McCartney, Tim Minchin, James Cordon, Kate Moss, Simon Cowell, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Burton, etc) so really curious who'll be there. Rory O'Malley Tweeted he'll be seeing the show tomorrow night, which is quite exciting :D

She's got a passport and I think you can pay cash, so hopefully she'll be ok

Ah yes, that's fine too of course. I just figured a bank card would be the most likely ID she may have :) Good luck at the lottery!

Out of Interest (because I spend way too much time thinking about this stuff) who would you cast in Les Mis if given the chance? Preferably people who haven't been in it before. I have a Fantine, Eponine, Javert and Enjolras firmly in mind!
I'd quite like to see Iwan Lewis as Marius or Enjolras...

#254402 Minchin, The Future

Posted paplazaroo on 11 February 2013 - 04:50 PM

So in the wake of his autotune nightmare and Matilda opening on broadway I've seen a lot of press about Minchin. In everything at the minute he seems to say his focus is on theatre which is great news as far as I'm concerned, he say's he is working on an adaptation of a film, does anyone know what this could be? Also he is writing an animated musical as he thinks we are due another Lion King or Aladdin. He also says he want's to write a musical based on an idea he's had for ages;

“It’s about fate and destiny – it’s star-crossed lovers with some gods. It’s very Greek, actually, but it’s going to be very modern and weird and it’s the coming together of many strands – kind of almost Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels... it’s an explosion of butterfly-wing flaps mucking it up for lovers. It’s a bit Sondheim-style, and what’s interesting about the couple is that they don’t meet until the very, very end. They keep missing each other but we know from the beginning that they’re destined for one another. So it’s as though Romeo and Juliet didn’t meet until the moment of the poison.”

I think that sounds cool in a Jason Robert Brown kind of a way. Anyway I thought I'd open a thread to discuss his projects in case anyone has any extra knowledge. I think he is going to be (maybe already is) the next massive thing in musical theatre, like a universally popular Sondheim.

#243070 Best Ever Musical Adaptation

Posted madaboutmusicals21 on 30 October 2012 - 04:09 PM

I know most musicals will have been adapted from something, but I was thinking along the lines of classic stories or films made into musicals.

Obviously this is a classic book to musical adaptation that has seriously stood the test of time!

#242208 What Is Your Favourite Ever Song From A Musical?

Posted westendmaniac on 24 October 2012 - 02:46 PM

I haven't seen the theatre production yet, but "Falling Slowly" from Once is one of my favourite songs of all time. Can't wait till it comes to the West End!!

Going a week after the first preview in London. Decided to get a £49.50 seat for my first visit (I'm almost certain there will be more as I love the music and the story). Really looking forward to this.

I think Hadley Fraser would be great as The Guy.

I noticed the front row is £19.50 and it seems to be off sale at the moment (at least I couldn't find any available seats and I tried random dates up to August). Has anyone heard if that row may be sold as day seats?
