London During The Olympics

01 August 2012 - 09:44 AM

I was in London on Sunday and Monday, and I can't remember the city ever being so quiet; also very friendly and non-aggressive. I'd very much recommend coming in for some theatre-going. It might get a bit worse from Friday onwards when the athletics start.

Some random notes....

Walked past the Duke of York at 9 on Monday - queue for Posh returns had about 5 people in it. Aso saw Ralph Fiennes on Old Compton St with a backpack and looking somewhat scruffy.

Tate Modern was really empty. I'd thoroughly recommend the new "Tanks" area - very atmospheric (and free).

Travel to Olympic venues fine, and queues to get in quite acceptable. Long queues for overpriced food. Bring sarnies and empty bottle to fill up from water fountains inside park. Really enjoyed weightlifting, quite enjoyed handball, and was bored by water-polo. All the glamorous sports for me!

This is a straight-through ninety minuter, with an unexpected central idea that I won't spoil. It's frequently funny and well acted by Stephen Mangan, Lisa Dillon and especially Llewella Gideon as the midwife.

That said, I really didn't care for it at all. It feels like one joke stretched to interminable length. And I found the Dillon/Mangan couple quite insufferable, which is a problem when they're on stage the whole time.
