I know this is still previewing but I can't really see this working with any amount of rehearsal. It is totally overpowered by its ambition (which I applaud) but it is cramming in too much of everything, leading to an unsatisfactory whole. Most of the performances are superb and there are enough ideas to keep one interested but the premise is just too ambitious to pull off. Echoes of Candide, Enron, and panto.

Saw it on Monday and completely agree with fringefan - a hoot. Brought back fond memories of Absolute Hell at the National but this has a wonderful cynicism all of its own. I would say hugely enjoyable and book now!

I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt for a first preview but it has a long way to climb to be even close to the enjoyment I got from the original RSC production or the Donmar revival of (OMG it seems like yesterday!) 1977 and 2001. I am envious of younger theatre-goers who can come fresh to a production like this and not be disappointed by expectations. I was slightly taken aback by comments from a couple in front of me who claim to be SRB’s biggest fans and were calling this the best thing he has ever done – love is blind. He is of course fabulous and obviously having  lots of fun, and it is an unusually energetic part  for him but it is hardly stretching his theatrical muscles and unfortunately some of supporting playing is just not strong enough – YET. Hopefully things will come together a bit more in the remaining previews.
