Already sold out well before press night....yet another success for Hampstead.
Beautiful staging and the most lavish set I have seen at the theatre so far and put the Orange Tree to shame after I had seen a matinee there this afternoon!
Uniformly excellent cast and production values and sensitively directed.
However, the play does feel thin (2 hours with the interval) and it does tend to repeat all the Chekhov themes that you would all have seen before....just not as well.
There is all the unrequited love and angst and disappointment that you would expect to find.
I think that an interesting trend is developing at Hampstead. The tickets are NOT cheap at £29 for the main house after previews and I think you have to be careful what you see there for that price. Yes they have had some astounding hits but as soon as they boob up that will be an expensive mistake for the audience.

Well worth a look in.
Astounding that it was written in 1924.
Very well acted and blisteringly relevant 100 years on.
Audible gasps from the audience at several key moments and excellent expose of relationships and the role of women.
I arrived a little late and I had to laugh when I saw the matinee audience at this theatre.....all seated 20 minutes before the play started!
I think the Orange Tree are excellent at rediscovering these neglected plays. My only criticism would be that the staging is a bit tatty.
I know they are limited in the round but the ticket prices are not that cheap and I would expect a bit more professionalism.
I do not expect automation and special effects but on more than one occasion I have thought the same thing at this theatre.

Ahead of The Low Road coming up at RC, after Clybourne Park and (for those who saw it) The Pain and The Itch, I would highly recommend this early play by Bruce Norris.
The Gate are selecting a wonderful range of new plays under the new manager there.
This was an excellent and shocking evening.
Typical Norris being challenging and witty and morbid all in quick succession.
Well worth a look I would say, made me laugh out loud and gasp at the same time!

Not a musical I know....but wanted to make sure people read it so that if they have never seen a Pina Bausch piece they might perhaps consider seeing one next time they are in London.
This was OUTSTANDING and I have not seen such a rapturous reception in an auditorium for many years,
Moving, spectacular, and totally awe inspiring.
The water onstage puts Singing In The Rain to shame (not to be mean to that great musical!) but here there were literally torrents of water in this.
A wonderful evening that will stay in my memory for years and I urge everyone to see a Bausch if get the chance.
