#252361 Will The Programme Ripoff Ever End?

That bloke in The Telegraph has a go today, basically saying same as we do on this thread. Wonder where he gets his ideas from?

Just sat two hours thu the Julius Caesar at the Donmar - it flew by! But usually 1.50 would be the limit. I speak for myself of course.

A bit late onto this one but I did enjoy it. Brilliant cast. I don't think this particular take on the play would work with actors less capable, the main characters. I felt that I was hearing some of the speeches for the first time. Clarity and conviction.

Am bemused by previous posts. Who cares what happens to the General? The opening of Act Two was as good as it gets and the dialogue is to the point and there isn't much of it. I suppose I don't see the more contemporary work out there now so my idea of a good Musical stops circa 1960 ( when was My Fair Lady? )

Was not actually that impressed by She Stoops or Inadmissible Evidence either. She Stoops was ok. I though he missed a trick with I.E. Started off all surreal and weird and then became Hodge just getting louder and louder and wilder and wilder. Would have liked to see what another director did with the same ingredients! <_<

Yep, yep and yep.

Honestly HG I'm failing to understand you here. I have seem most if not all of SRB's stuff and I can't recall him ever getting the 'wrong' reaction through poor acting or direction. Can you be more specific?

And I'm not sure you can say for sure there are no laughs in Timon. Did you ask Will last time you saw him? My feeling is that you are thinking more of the old style of acting - this is called a tragedy so don't laugh - rather than the more contemporary view which is more ironic and cynical. Take Iago for example, no laughs? What did you think of SRB's go at that part?

In the programme it says he did the Villains' Opera which is one of our worst ever but in this case he deals with material written by good writers before him. He arranges things. Ok more than that
you see  what I mean. He selects and rearranges so to speak. He did the prize winning tv Persausion.

Also the soil is all glued except for the patch with the potatoes.
