HijinxTheatre

Hijinx Theatre is one of Wales’ leading professional theatre companies and a passionate advocate for the inclusion of people with learning disabilities in the arts. Since 1981 we have toured beautifully crafted small-scale theatre to communities throughout the UK and, in more recent years, casting actors with and without learning disabilities in our productions. We also make short performances called Pods for non-traditional theatre spaces, which tour to festivals and events in the UK and Europe.

Here at Hijinx we love not only producing theatre but providing drama workshops and performance training for other people who enjoy theatre too. We have recently launched professional performance training for actors with learning disabilities called The Academy, and Creative Choices, a course offering life skills through drama run in conjunction with Vision 21. From 2012 to 2013, we are also hosting a series of inclusive training residencies delivered by some of the UK’s most exciting theatre companies, including Spymonkey, Frantic Assembly and Cardboard Citizens.

We have a long history of running community arts projects, the foremost of which is our inclusive drama group Odyssey. Odyssey meets for weekly workshops on drama skills and mounts full scale productions at Christmas, with the help of a professional production team at Wales Millennium Centre.

In 2008 we conceived and founded Unity Festival as a platform for the highest quality inclusive arts from around the world. Expanding rapidly each year, Unity attracts the very best performers in dance, theatre, puppetry, comedy, music and more, who share Hijinx’s ethos of working inclusively. Unity takes place in Cardiff, hosted by Wales Millennium Centre.
