#264699 Booing

Ive left prior to the megamix a couple of times at bad shows. Thus negating my need to boo or not clap or pitifully shake my head.

At the insistance of a minor cast member, (one of several trying to engineer a standing ovation during a Megamix after an interminable show), I did indeed rise to my feet which then rather publically marched across the front of the side stalls (I was in the centre blocks of seats) to the nearest exit. Not the reaction he was intending I think.

It felt damn good - and the production was being filmed which may have given them some additional editing to do!!

It's a famous American book, a famous American movie, a well known and relatively successful American musical. Why would they change the spelling now?  That's parochialism in the extreme.

Personaly I think we should state that the story is "too american" for the British public, relocate the story to Liverpool, and call it "The Colour Purple" - just to get our own back for "The Full Monty".

Can you name one Sondheim musical that has run for a year. Thought not.

Talking just the London productions, and also discounting Gypsy and West Side Story where Sondheim did the lyrics

Funny Thing Happened 1963-65 (792 performances)
Little Night Music 1974-5 (406 performances)
Side by Side by Sondheim 1976-9 (806 performances)
Follies 1987-9 (644 performances)

With the combined productions (including small scale off-west-end), Sweeney, one of the most revived shows in London over the past few decades, must have exceeded any of these.

Make that a third. A show that I hated restaged in a venue I dislike.

This is only very slightly above Viva Forever at the bottom of the "to see" list!

... espically Mama which was sung out of tune last night, mainly by the lead girl...why she got the lead is beyond me her vocals are very weak thoughout...

Sounds perfect casting for the Spice Girls then !!

#238908 Biggest Musical Theatre Flops Ever ?!

in 1930, at the Duchess Theatre, "The Intimate Revue" over-ran by so much on opening night that it was eventually abandoned and the rest of the run cancelled. Not even one complete performance.
