I don't think she is "rubbish" but she is not an actress who commands the stage - I saw her in Dolls House but wasn't overly taken with her performance - I still remember the awful Antigone at the Old Vic but that WAS ten years ago. She is certainly not on the short list of performers I try to avoid at all costs....(I failed to avoid a listed performer in Mother Courage this weekend and have now made further vows not to be sucked in by favourable opinions)

Saw Keira in After Juliet at the Young Vic as part of the NT Conenections festival in 1998/9, possibly. She was great and clearly a talent. She commanded the stage very well and was the stand out actor in not just that show every other show at the young vic that year (I saw them all and was in one of them. too). She could have easily walked into any drama school after that performance. Not surprised at all when years later she started popping up in movies. The daggers will be out, but, if she was anything like she was then, she's going to surprise a few people.

Always makes me laugh that people are quick to slate screen actors who take to the stage, yet when a movie is made of a production people assume that stage stars automatically can act on film....which isnt always the case. Although this does tend to be more aimed at musical theatre actors.

Got my ticket for 20th January in Row B. I am only going to see Keira and
cannot wait. You do not get an Oscar nomination if you cannot act and she will
prove all the doubters wrong I guarantee, although not sure what here American accent will be like. (Not that great in The Jacket).

I'm going on Christmas Eve ~ taking my sister as her Christmas present ~ she only ever goes to the theatre if there's a movie star cast. I have seen Keira Knightley in the flesh and whatever IT is she has it. As far as her acting goes she's fine ~ I've seen better and I've seen much worse...

I thought she was truly superb in The Duchess - more than held her own with Ralph Fiennes. I cannot wait to see her on stage especially opposite Damian Lewis.

Saw 1st/extra preview on Saturday. Can't say I became a huge fan of the play: was it Crimp or Moliere's doings that made me feel that way? None of the characters are likeable (a la Crimp) and there is a distinct lack of "drama" overall and drive to the proceedings.
Having said that, Miss Knightley was, in my mind, very very good (especially 2 moments in act 2). She DID hold the stage, as a previous post noted she did in the past at the Young Vic. Her American accent is excellent, and, when the audience weren't sitting in silent scrutiny and finally relaxed a bit, they laughed at her jokes, and reacted well to her. She will INDEED prove the doubters wrong.
Damian Lewis is very good, although I think he can go further in the role (but it was a 1st preview!). Tara Fitzgerald was fine (wasn't a huge fan in DOLL'S HOUSE either), and in this, she's a very "big" character, but does well with it. Again, could go further. Everyone else plays well. Tim McMullan almost steals it at the start. Chuk Iwuji a bit TOO camp to be believed as straight.
Ending a bit abrupt and bizarre: don't know whether direction or play that dictated that. It was a kind of "oh...the curtain's falling...oh, that's the end". And as I said, the play...meh...could have been a meatier choice for everyone, but hey. Most people are there for Keira, and she, in my mind, scores a hit!
NB: I queued for the advertised "£10 day seats" which, when the box office opened, I was informed was " a misprint, yeah, we don't do those. Our day seats are restricted view in the circle at £40". GULP. Very annoyed. Ended up back of the back (back row of the balcony), but actually fine (when people on the front row weren't leaning, inevitably, forward! lol)
