I saw some interview somewhere with Rachel saying she found out she was Elphaba a few days before Christmas 2009.( 3 months before she started). So going by that it'll proably be the end of next month before anything is announced.

If she does do well, she would make an ideal movie Elphaba as she could play the appropriate age on film.
I do like that idea, if the film ever gets made she could be the perfect fit. As you say though, a lot depends on how well the Les Mis movie, and her part, is received.

i was joking about that, its what we all hope though. i'd love to see sam make it on the big screen!
but after hearing her voice i would love to see her as elphaba in a few years too.
even scaramouche/ meatloaf? i bet she's got that edge to her voice!

I don't agree, there have been several mooted in this thread already as contenders either now or in the future.
And I doubt they will make an announcement until they're ready to announce Rachel's departure, which although we're all assuming will happen in October may not actually be finalised yet. I doubt we'll hear anything until they finalise cast change and all intended departures, main roles at least.
I wasn't talking about Sam as Nessa, I think she'd be a perfect Elphaba in a couple of years. Niamh Perry was the name mentioned in connection with Nessa. Sam certainly isn't off being a Hollywood star though, that's a huge exaggeration from one small role in one blockbuster. There's nothing to say she doesn't intend on returning to the stage, and she's certainly not a name here let alone in Hollywood.

Sam's already back in Oliver. Its going to be interesting to see what bigger acting /singing role, comes her way next after Eponine and Nancy .I will give Michelle a go, but Sam would have been high on my list for Cabaret - I missed her last time. I agree I can't see a shortage of potential Elphabas. There's been a run of very strong Scaramouche's recently (with the power, acting skill and comedy timing) and I would think Sabrina or Lauren or Amanda could play Elphaba well at some point and there's probably other possibilities too . I can't find the others singing from Wicked on the net, but Lauren has sung Popular on TV and For Good in a cabaret and she sounds great . Depends perhaps where you want to place Elphaba after Rachel. Niamh has got some beautiful material from some new musicals on youtube, and I would love to see her in something too.
I just wish that while they have someone very, very, special in the role like Rachel (alongside Gina, who is also someone special) they would actually do a cast recording and preserve it for posterity.

I like Sabrina, but I'm not entirely sure how good she'd be as Elphaba. I love her to prove me wrong. But she can't be the only person people wanna see. I have a couple of names in mind who I'd love in the role!

people wanna see many names- she's the only consistent one. she's not the only one cat123! personally i think she'd bring something completely new to the role. remember they're not looking for a new rachel tucker, they're looking for a new elphaba.

She's the only consistent one because she's mentioned it as a role a few times in the past, IIRC. I seem to remember on twitter her and Gina saying how good it'd be to perform against each other as Elphaba/Glinda. Fan crowds picked that up and now there's an underlying feel of hype about trying to get Sabrina into the show (only helped by Gina being Glinda currently). There's no new information at the moment, just old stories/suggestions/rumours being dredged up.
I don't think that to the wider public Sabrina's name means anything though, Wicked have been known recently to start casting with names in mind rather than talent - however who knows what they will do. And there is that ever-in-the-background rumour of a 2013 tour...

that is a bit harsh danielwhit. i believe she mentioned it just as much as amanda coutts or jenne lee james or hannah levane have done. the fact she has played two iconic leads to much fan recognition and praise is why i want her in the role and not because she mentioned it once or twice!

How about Ghost's Rebecca Trehearn for the next Elphaba? She's got the voice...
