In the context of Knot of the Heart, it means frequent references to local shops, streets and parks.  There were local references in there that might have been missed by someone from outside the area.  That to me was a downside of the play, in that it seemed to be reaching out too knowing about its performance location and its likely audience, and detracted from what otherwise I thought was a strong play with a great central performance by Lisa Dillon.  Looking back at the reviews, the Independent called the play "almost site-specific": " Indeed, as a cautionary adjunct to the play, the theatre could run tours to, say, nearby Clissold Park, where Lucy prostitutes herself, or to the very cafe on Upper Street where she sometimes buys her dealer one of their meringues."
