I see a lot of children's theatre, it is often sloppy and amateurish compared with adult theatre and it rarely gets reviewed seriously and so it is easy to get away with sub-standard work. Citing a single counter-example (purely on the basis that it made money) does not alter that.
Yes, I think a play set in 1929 Germany should ignore the Nazis completely for the simple reason that the book does. Surprised you would advocate wholesale revision of an author's text simply because they are dead.

Emil and the Detectives is the Olivier's annual family show over Christmas. It's not children's theatre, despite being based on a children's book. War Horse was also first produced for this same seasonal slot, without any plans at the time to morph into the financial saviour of the NT which it has fortunately become, and so it makes good sense to compare the two.
Epicoene, you must have also seen much excellent theatre for and by young people. Given that it's generally under-reviewed, it would be a public service if you would let us all know of your good experiences. For example, Fevered Sleep has an excellent reputation in this field as do many regional theatres for their family shows over Christmas, including Bristol Old Vic, Sherman Cymru (Cardiff), the New Vic (Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs.) and doubtless many other companies.
