I really wonder if I'm going through an exceptionally benevolent phase, because I didn't think this was bad at all. It's not the best production or the best play ever, but it was a perfectly nice, entertaining evening out and sometimes after work that's all I'm looking for. Thought Sher was very good, but absolutely no complaints about the rest of the cast either. And I found the musical interludes rather cheery. Perhaps it's age... I do get the question of why the NT would choose to dig this up, but since it did, I don't regret seeing it.

Nick Sampson seems to be popping up in small roles in a vast number of NT productions at the moment, and he is brilliant in all of them. Would be interesting to see him in some bigger roles in future.

Nick Sampson is a true NT regular-  in nearly every production Hytner directs, plus a few more besides. After his stint in this, he'll be in Othello. I do agree with you though- I'd love to seem him tackle a leading role.

Ah, I hadn't clocked that - do we know yet which role(s) he's taking? Would be nice to see him in something juicy. I think I first noticed him in London Assurance - small part but he really made something of it.

Completely off topic, but I'm massively looking forward to Othello.

No, NT website doesn't say. He was excellent, too,  in Timon of Athens.

It might be me but as I understand it the writer fell out with Brecht and his plays are the opposite of Brecht.  As to the production it didn't work but I was glad to have seen it

He'll be playing Lodovico in Othello.  Great actor.

Yes indeed - he was excellent in London Assurance and a stand-out in Stuff Happens. I think I first noticed him in His Dark Materials where he showed excellent puppeteering skills as some sort of midget swashbuckler.
