Joe Hill-Gibbins (YV's The Changeling etc) will direct the ever-brilliant John Heffernan in the title role of Marlowe's Edward II in the Olivier later this year. Presumably part of the £12 Travelex Season.
Further details on this production, and Hytner's plans for 2013 and beyond, should be out today in the annual NT press conference.

Hurrah for Heffernan. I'm less interested in the director though. The Changeling drove me out of my mind at the Young Vic.

I wasn't keen on The Changeling, but I loved his productions of The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Glass Menagerie.

I didn't see either of those. I've only seen him direct The Changeling. So maybe I shouldn't judge him too harshly solely on that.

Is it really the NT press conference today? Normally that causes a bit of hubbub and I can't seem to find a trace of it online

I was told by a reputable theatre critic that it was today, but clearly they got their dates muddled up, possibly with the SOLT one which was this morning. I suspect it's tomorrow since I believe the next NT season brochure comes out tomorrow too.

This sounds bloody great - never had the chance to see Edward II, and really, really want to.

It is good value. Seen it a couple of times, once with Simon Russell-Beale which few who saw it will forget (particularly the front row).
