There was an interview with SRB in the Guardian saying he's intending to do this frequently-rumoured production in 2014. Not sure if it's the part for him - of those who haven't played it I'd prefer to see Michael Pennington.

Is Lear a very unsympathetic character? Not dad of the year, I'll grant you, but not a cartoon villain either. I'd expect an actor like SRB to be good at getting out all the nuances.

That seems to vary - McKellen certainly got his nuances out, can't remember if Jacobi did.
