What a cracker. Proper play beautifully acted. Could have done with a final tweak : one or two phrases did not ring true or were too 'modern ' and some sharpening of scene after the interval required.
Yes, it would be nice to see Lester play Othello for real and even nicer to see him play all the other Shakespearean roles he is capable of from Macbeth to Benedict via all the different kings. That might be what the playwright is getting at.

Incidentally, they filmed it the other night - why? For posterity? It was straight on so no subtleties.

Not the point of the play but I enjoyed the main section - about the company of actors and the effect of Ira Aldridge joining them - far more than the book-ending opening and closing scenes, which seemed to be in a different style and to belong to a different and less interesting play. In fact, I could happily have watched an entire play based simply on the acting company, Aldridge or no, as I found the squabbling and tantrums fascinating, whereas the Aldridge story, i.e. the actual focus of the play, literally sent me to sleep.

Due to work and illness getting in the way I haven't been able to get to this. Does anyone know what the status of returns has been like?

As Lolita Chakrabarti won the Standard's Most Promising Playright Award yesterday for this play, I shall in future pay proper heed to Lynette, Sage of the Board.

Well at the moment I'm pushing the all gal JC to my other half and he is most reluctant so my reputation is hanging out there. We'll see.
Thanks HG for the affirmation. :-))))

I am used to being in a minority, sometimes of one... at least the two productions I'm seeing on Saturday haven't been mentioned here so far and certainly aren't the subject of a dedicated thread. My hopes will not be raised by others' views and if I say I don't care for what I see, no-one else will take any notice!
