I would use twitter but I don't have that many followers. ( I hear your smiles) so anyone who thinks  he might have some reach, do tweet an inquiry.

Someone tweeted Dominic Cavendish last week asking about Mr Spencer, but no reply.

In my view Charles is one of the best critics we have. Why is his whereabouts such a mystery?

This conversation makes me a bit uncomfortable. He might be ill or having a personal crisis - just because you like his reviews, it doesn't mean he isn't entitled to some privacy.

Charles Spencer has been one of the main reasons I have bought the Telegraph for many years. The warmth and enthusiasm of his writing is wonderful and although I have never met him, it's easy to feel you know someone when you read his words so often.

I fully agree he is entitled to his privacy but it would just be nice to know that he is OK and we'll be reading his articles again soon.

And if he is unwell, he might find some comfort in knowing that his readers are missing him.

I'm not missing him, I'm sorry if he's unwell but I find his reviews offensive and unhelpful (and I rarely agree with him, good or bad). But I hope he recovers.

I do not find his reviews offensive, but he is the worst critic of the lot for spoilers, you can be sure he will give away every single staging trick and surprise. For that reason I only ever read his reviews (if at all) after the event.
