A very interesting and unusual performance from Rylance, as I'd hoped. Like his Richard II from a few years ago, he seemed to spend much of the play in a semi-bewildered state: not the deep schemer as Gloucester is often played, but a sort of loveless creep who can't believe what he's getting away with.

A nice little improvised touch on the night I saw it: as he got to the line "All the world to nothing!" in Act I, he walked slowly across the stage, reached out and caught a little dandelion seed that had been slowly drifting over the audience, and stood contemplating it for a second. He got a big round of applause for that.

The cross-dressing worked well, I thought. It seemed to highlight the strangeness of this exceptionally disfunctional family.

I didn't like: Roger Lloyd Pack urging the audience to cheer and shout "Long live King Richard!", like he was back in panto.

I realise I'm late in coming to this one, but why isn't Mark Rylance a knight, did he turn it down? Absolutely loved it from the manic laughter to the bitter end. Raved at length on the blog http://www.frontrowd...aturday-19.html
