I wouldn't go to Zizzi again after last week. My friends and I were going to see Legally Blonde (start time half 7) and we sat down at 20 past 5, starters took nearly an hour (we only had dough sticks and garlic bread to share) and the main was served at 5 to 7! Thank goodness The Savoy was only a few metres away! Nearly spoiled the night for us.

I feel I should also recommend the two restaurants I ALWAYS go to- one before the matinee, the other before the evening. "Spud. Eat Me." is a brilliant, cheap and delicious new baked potato place. Cosy, lots of great, exciting fillings. On New Row, just off St Martin's Lane, not far from Covent Garden. And Wagamama ( I tend to go to the Southbank one before NT shows, but they're everywhere). Quick, fresh and tasty, nice big portions, pretty cheap (prices have increased in the past few months, but it's still v reasonable).

Two of our favorite food haunts are the Cafe at St Martin's in the Field which does really lovely food. They normally have one meat & one vegetarian option plus the usual soups, salads, pastries etc. Otherwise if you're looking for a good independent cafe there's The Breadline on Duncannon Street near Charing Cross.

Don't be afraid to tell waiting staff you're eating a pre-theatre meal. Most of the time they'll keep an eye on the clock for you. And don't all go crowding into Spud. Eat me, there needs to be room for me! >:o

We told them Weez, they weren't very sympathetic! I've always walked past Spud before, might pop in one day when I'm killing time.
Bistro 1 just up Southampton Street (opposte Savoy), is v cheap and good. They have a website w/ menu to view I believe.
I'd highly recommend Bistro 1 as well, I always go there if I'm at a theatre anywhere near Covent Garden. Sophie's Steakhouse is good too though, and Salien on the Strand itself isn't bad either.

Well, thanks to everyone. We're in Belgo tonight pre-Recruiting Officer (having had a rather pleasant kebab in Camden Lock for lunch) and we'll probably give Bistro 1 a look tomorrow and see what we think...or one of the other tempting alternatives...

If you like Indian food, try Masala Zone in Floral Street, just opposite the stage door of the Royal Opera House. It is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious, but it is worth getting there fairly early. I have often seen a queue waiting to go in, while I was leaving. I go there with friends, or to meet friends, as, not only do we enjoy the food, but one can actually talk, without having to shout over the noise from other diners, or ghastly loud pop music. Also, a word of praise for the staff, who are always friendly and helpful.

Another one that I like, which is a bit further away, near Leicester Square, just opposite the Comedy Theatre in Panton Street, is the Stockpot. I have been going there for many years, and it is great value.

Leon's menu sounds appealing but when I ate there, they served my meal in an awkward box, even though I'd asked for a plate to avoid this. Portions were a bit stingy for me, too, but I suppose that makes them healthier! I then signed up for their "club" and received a discount voucher for dinner and went back to try them again, only to be told they weren't serving the dinner menu - which appears to be the same as the daytime one anyway - that day. I haven't given up on them but find soup and bread at Pret or EAT much more reliable, for a pre-theatre snack, and more comfortable if alone, too.
