Public opinion will divide between delight and frustration at this outdated, simpleminded entertainment which strives for perfect triviality.

Done well, it is still one of the great stage comedies
Done badly, it is awfully dated

I did an adaptation of this classic a few years back - it still has great pulling power. We did update some of the dialogue a bit, cut some of the sentimentality, but kept the feel, kept the pace, and people liked it.

Saw Tom Courtenay in this more years ago than I care to remember. Don't think I could sit through it now though

Yes, a very creaky piece now. It needs a huge amount of "business" to make it funny and an exceptional comic in the lead role.

Matinee preview today well-attended and production well-received. Yes, it is potentially now a creaky piece and either I have nothing to compare it with or have forgotten if I did in fact see it before, but I felt it held up well and I particularly enjoyed Jane Asher swirling and twirling imperiously as Charley's real aunt - fabulous costume and the set for the 3rd act was really impressive.
