I saw this last night in Glasgow.
Award winning theatre? No!
A good night out? Yes!
It's a juke-box musical and the genre almost guarantees these answers to the above questions.
I'm old enough to remember the tv series and I thought the storyline was fittingly farcical. Several good laughs, plenty of titters and a good few groans linked together by a series of improbable events and a load of nostalgic songs. Same as every other juke-box musical.
I liked the set - bright, simple and effective.
Two things let the show down though.
They had a large chorus for a travelling show but they weren't used very often and didn't do very much when on stage (not a criticism of the cast).
And the pricing. ATG have grossly overestimated the pulling power of The Monkeys and need to charge regular regional prices, not premium prices.
For a good night out buy a cheap ticket for a mid-week show and get upgraded.
