I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation. A deftly edited text is well-acted by a cast of six (including some very good doubling-up) with economical but effective staging and plenty of humour mined from the story, together with some very touching moments.
It was really nice to see a group of young students from Hackney Community College enjoying the play and whooping/cheering their appreciation at the end. And I enjoyed my first visit to this great little venue. The pub itself is pleasant and has a very good selection of gins and whisky. After a friendly chat with the artistic directors, while waiting for the house to open I sat reading while sipping a good single malt and listening to the Beatles playing on the PA. That's what theatregoing should be like.
