Meryl would probably best the best out of a limited pool of actors with the right credentials.

I totally take the point that most theatre actors don't know how to adapt to film.

I would argue the other way - most theatre actors have a wider training and extensive knowledge of all forms of acting - it is less likely a TV star able to cope with the job of performing live!

I remember seeing Petula Clark in the role and she was terrific, but I think Betty Buckley would be the best choice, although she is not well known as a movie star.
Patti Lu Pone has a very irritating, mannered voice, with a horrid nasal quality to it. Unfortunately I bought the DVD of the concert version of "Sweeney Todd" before seeing it beforehand, and I cannot bear to watch it, as I find her such an embarrassment.

Re. the Actress who can sing vs. the singer who can act argument..... you can do a LOT in a studio with vocals. You can do naff all with acting mistakes/weaknesses! Personally I'd LOVE to see Glenn Close on the big screen with this. I LIKE the vocal vulnerability of her performance on the LA Recording much more than I like Patti Loopy-ones whacky acting with no consonants. And yes, Glenn Close would be a MUCH bigger box office draw. I can't remember who it was on this thread at the beginning who said something about them wanting a box office hit so cast Patti??!? Who the hell is she out of theatreland?!

Talking of all these actresses, did anyone see Glenn Close singing 'Losing My Mind' at the Barbara Cook Music Section of the most recent Kennedy Center Honours? It popped up on my facebook this morning and I must say I really enjoyed her performance! It was only about half the song though, and watch the whole thing too - there are some fab performances...Patti LuPone included!

Had Lloyd Webber chosen to go this route in 1996, he could have filmed this stage version of the musical. The scene is taken from a promo appearance for the show --

applause 2 - One of the saddest parts of the whole SB fiasco was the decision NOT to make a full-Australian cast recording.  The clips I've heard of Debra Byrne has her as one of my favorite Normas.  And Hugh Jackman -- who thought that wasn't  worth recording???

Didnt want to assume that you all saw this -- interesting article:

Thought it was noteworthy that ALW regrets pulling the plug on LND in London too early (citing that the last weeks saw an uptick)
