You'd think a stage with a narrow opening would quite suit a show about nuns.

Did the Sunderland Empire architects have a size fixation? The website states:

Quote

There were  many main entrances to the theatre, each of which had their own payboxes - little  arched hatches in the walls where you brought your ticket and then, having gone  through a tiny entrance in single file, you were able to take your seats. Incidentally,  these doors can still be seen on the outside of the theatre.

Saw the tour at the Sunderland Empire last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was delayed slightly due to technical issues but once it started it ran smoothly and there were no problems.

Cynthia Erivo was amazing! Really loved her voice and acting - she was very funny. Loved the rest of the cast too, especially Eddie, TJ and Julie Atherton as Mary Robert.

Mixed feelings about the changes - really liked the new sets and different arrangements of some of the songs ('Life I Never Led' etc). Was quite sad to see 'How I Got the Calling' had been completely re-written, and was 'Do the Sacred Mass' cut from the bar scene? Think cutting the prologue at the beginning of the show worked though.

I saw this a while back. Loved the woman playing Deloris (completely forgotten her name)! Thought the show generally still worked really well. Was so upset How I Got the Calling was cut, possibly one of my favourite songs. Also it ment we were not really fully told why Mary Roberts would maybe not want to be a nun. The song that replaced it wasn't great and really fell flat. I remember How I got the calling being hilarious in London.

Still a great show though. I loved the new arrangements for The Life I never led and am a huge Julie Atherton fan.

Did miss 'Do the sacred mass' as well, another of my fav songs!

Personally - the new book and alterations to the score have butchered the show as it once was, the only improvement is the chance for Eddie/Deloris to have a conversation that doesn't revolve around "you got your gun out just for me" as the general theme.

The motivations of the characters now make no sense though, we learn nothing about why Sister Mary Robert is the way she is, Sister Mary Patrick has had most of her comedy stuff completely slashed and Lazarus now has turned into the piano playing nun and little beyond that.

In other words - How I Got The Calling was cut, that's the worst thing they did to the show.

However - Mo' Sup now seems to have turned into a stand-up comedian?

PS - saw this show a good few months ago now, so I can't remember anything like everything I picked fault with at the time compared to London's production!
