Yes, it's disappointing how many of the negative reviews are based on a mistaken assumption about Les Mis as a musical (or 'lobotomised opera' as the awful Guardian reviewer ridiculously described it) or just a general hatred of musicals.  I'd much rather read negative reviews if they are negative from the basis of research and knowledge and can comment critically in an informed way rather than just those written by people who clearly hate musicals!

It's getting plenty of 5* reviews to go along with the negative ones though, it was always going to be polarising.


As for that audio of One Day More, I assume it will be better when accompanied by the visuals, as only Sam and Eddie really impressed me from that brief clip.  And ending it when they did on that bit of the Thenardiers was not a good idea - I wish I'd heard more of them than a few seconds which didn't sound good at all!  I'm obviously reserving complete judgment until I see the movie though, just commenting on what I heard in that clip.

The Guardian film critics have been very difficult to please of late. Don't think anything in this weeks film supplement got more than 3 stars.

I'm sure she's aware of that, but surely it's not strange of a fan of the stage show to trust opinions of other fans more than official reviews? It's more likely that she'll subjectively enjoy something people with a similar background to hers have enjoyed than something which critics who, for example, have never been into musical theatre or don't know a thing about Les Mis liked/disliked.

eta: that said, having read a few reviews it's clear that some critics are well aware of Les Misérables and do take that into consideration when reviewing the film, e.g. the one commenting on (the lack of) establishing the bond between Valjean and Cosette...
